All six kids, Mom, Jen and I had a great time listening to the Marine Corps Jazz Band playing downtown. Jen had been in band for years and she was humming right along! Christian hoped there would be a trombone, but no luck. The funnel cakes, fried Oreos, and candy covered apples all made our day! The night ended with 20+ minutes of fireworks that the kids just loved..ME too...

Gunnar and CAMP

Gunnars dreams of becoming a BEAR and earning his right to use a BUCK KNIFE have all come true. Gunnar had a wonderful week at Camp for the Scouts. He fished, shot BB guns, used a bow and arrow, water fun day, painted, played sports, played in the dirt and had a blast doing it all. We are so proud of our boy wanting to follow in his daddies footsteps! It was a long camp, 8-4pm up at Camp Lejeune.Gunnar has never been more tired!

Sandies Big ART in MN

Dala Häst Fest
Dala Horses are coming to Scandia!!!
And you ask “What?” And “Why?”
Each summer over 5000 visitors come to Gammelgården Museum and the Scandia community—as the oldest Swedish settlement in Minnesota, we have become a destination of choice for visitors—both domestic and international. These guests come to learn, celebrate their heritage and culture, enjoy the scenery and visualize their family stories. Along the way, they take photos and leave dollars with local businesses (and talk to friends back home!).
As a way to enhance the experience of Scandia for the guests and to enliven the local landscape, we have taken a lesson from Chicago (cows), St. Paul( Snoopys, Lucys, Charlie Browns), Ontario (Orcas), Utah (Moose) and other cities—namely, if you provide public art characters, people will come!! We have chosen Dala horses (häst—rhymes with fest). Nothing says Swedish like a Dala Häst!!! These Dala are 5’ tall, 5’ long and are made of cast concrete to be painted in unique styles.
ARTISTS interested in designing a Dala Håst, please call Lynne Moratzka 651-433-3430 or download an application form here.
Those horses SPONSORED by a business or household will be sold at an AUCTION and profits will benefit the Scandia-Marine Lions Club Scholarship Fund, the Scandia Elementary Enrichment Fund and the Gammelgården Endowment Fund.
We invite you to join the fun by sponsoring or purchasing a Dala Häst.
Some unique parts of this plan include:
* Placement of 6 of these painted horses along the highways as they enter the Scandia business area - Highway 97, Olinda Trail and Oakhill Road.* Purchasing a horse to be gifted to and displayed at Scandia Elementary School allowing the children to have a contest to design their horse’s decor.
Call us with your questions/comments! Better yet, fill out the sponsorship form (click here) and return it to us by April 1, 2006.

Horses to adopt! Horses to adopt!
Gammelgården Museum, Scandia, Minnesota, announces a very special event in Scandia for the summer of 2006….a Dala Häst (horse)Fest! To welcome visitors to Scandia (the FIRST Swedish settlement in Minnesota) and help promote the Fest large concrete Dala horses will be created, painted and placed in Scandia (think the St. Paul Snoopys). There will be 12 of the 5’x5’ hästar made during the winter; painting will begin in March with the completed häst in place by June 1. The häst are available for sponsorship or ownership—with appropriate sponsor identification on the base.
SPONSORSHIP: a sponsor could...
* Cover the initial cost of one horse, but not take ownership. These horses would later be sold at auction to the highest bidder. Cost of this sponsorship = $1500 (includes artist fee)
* Purchase one horse and donate it to the municipality of Scandia. There would be a maximum of six of these horses placed at predetermined locations near the roads or landmarks leading into the town of Scandia. Your name on the identification plaque. Cost of this sponsorship = $2200 (includes the artist fee)
* Purchase the horse for personal, professional, or organizational ownership. These sponsors would be matched up with one of the selected artists who would personalize the design for the sponsor. Examples might include a bank that wanted coins and currency incorporated into the design or a restaurant with paintings of food in the design. Cost Of this sponsorship =$3000 (includes artist fee)
* Purchase a completely finished horse and design at auction at the culmination of the Häst Fest on August 19, 2006. These would be the horses from level “a” above. The price of this level would be determined by the auction bidders.
