Sandies Big ART in MN
Dala Häst Fest
Dala Horses are coming to Scandia!!!
And you ask “What?” And “Why?”
Each summer over 5000 visitors come to Gammelgården Museum and the Scandia community—as the oldest Swedish settlement in Minnesota, we have become a destination of choice for visitors—both domestic and international. These guests come to learn, celebrate their heritage and culture, enjoy the scenery and visualize their family stories. Along the way, they take photos and leave dollars with local businesses (and talk to friends back home!).
As a way to enhance the experience of Scandia for the guests and to enliven the local landscape, we have taken a lesson from Chicago (cows), St. Paul( Snoopys, Lucys, Charlie Browns), Ontario (Orcas), Utah (Moose) and other cities—namely, if you provide public art characters, people will come!! We have chosen Dala horses (häst—rhymes with fest). Nothing says Swedish like a Dala Häst!!! These Dala are 5’ tall, 5’ long and are made of cast concrete to be painted in unique styles.
ARTISTS interested in designing a Dala Håst, please call Lynne Moratzka 651-433-3430 or download an application form here.
Those horses SPONSORED by a business or household will be sold at an AUCTION and profits will benefit the Scandia-Marine Lions Club Scholarship Fund, the Scandia Elementary Enrichment Fund and the Gammelgården Endowment Fund.
We invite you to join the fun by sponsoring or purchasing a Dala Häst.
Some unique parts of this plan include:
* Placement of 6 of these painted horses along the highways as they enter the Scandia business area - Highway 97, Olinda Trail and Oakhill Road.* Purchasing a horse to be gifted to and displayed at Scandia Elementary School allowing the children to have a contest to design their horse’s decor.
Call us with your questions/comments! Better yet, fill out the sponsorship form (click here) and return it to us by April 1, 2006.
